Prof Peter Abrahams examining one of the Rothschild Bronzes at the FitzwilliamProf Peter Abrahams (Clinical Anatomist at Warwick University’s Medical School) examined the anatomy of the Rothschild figures. He was amazed by their accuracy and the fact that they showed all the muscles in the correct positions. He also noted the presence of several muscles not normally visible on the surface of a human body, and concluded that whoever made the original clay models must have practised disssection. Prof Abrahams then reviewed nude male figures by all the key Renaissance sculptors and concluded that the Rothschild bronzes were most likely made by Michelangelo due to the number of similarities, including a number of anomalies, which only occur in Michelangelo’s work.
